How are the sizing capacities of heating and cooling systems measured?

How is the efficiency of A/C and Heat Pumps systems measured?

It is measured by SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), it is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a S.E.E.R. efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system will be. The SEER rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 17. Also keep in mind the SEER is the total between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. It has to be a matched pair that has an AHRI number.

How can I increase the efficiency and life of my home’s heating and cooling systems?

The most important thing you can do is clean and replace your filters frequently. Also, the next best thing is to have a maintenance plan in place. At least have a check up once a year. Its like changing the oil in your car, your not going to drive 10K miles and change oil. One of the biggest mistakes we see is faulty duct system, if your having really high utilities bill please get a duct system inspection. Finally, shades, drapes, shutters, or screens should be installed on windows that are exposed to extreme sunlight.

Is a system with more capacity (bigger) better?

No. A larger system with more capacity delivers less comfort and costs more to operate. An air conditioner is at its least efficient when first turning on. A system with too much capacity will run in numerous short cycles, turning on and off repeatedly, therefore causing it to be less efficient. Also keep in mind that an air conditioner only removes humidity when it’s running, so a system with shorter run cycles doesn’t remove humidity from the air very well. So you will cool the space quickly and leave the moisture in the air making it extremely uncomfortable.

How long should my system run in a cycle?

There is no exact answer for how long your system should run during each cycle. The average air conditioner is sized to remove the heat from your home as fast as it comes in, on a 110° day. Therefore, ideally, on a 110° day the system should be able to keep up with the incoming heat, but not gain on it and be able to turn off. The cooler it is below 110°, the more the system will cycle on and off.

What is the difference between R-22 and R-410A refrigerants?

Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of an air conditioner, these liquid agents cool and dehumidify indoor air. For years, the most common refrigerant used in air-conditioning systems was R-22. In response to growing environmental concerns, production of systems using R-22 refrigerant is being phased out. Because R-410A contains no chlorine, it is considered ozone-friendly.

What is two-stage cooling?

Two-stage cooling means the air conditioner or heat pump has a compressor with two levels of operation: high for hot summer days and low for milder days. Since the low setting is adequate to meet household-cooling demands 80% of the time, a two-stage unit runs for longer periods and produces more even temperatures. Longer cooling cycles also translate to quieter, more efficient operation and enhanced humidity control. Compared to a single-stage unit, a two-stage air conditioner or heat pump can remove twice as much moisture from the air. This is important because when moisture levels are high, there's a higher potential for mold and other pollutant problems.

What are the benefits of clean air?

Allergies and asthma are two health problems that can be helped with clean indoor air. When airborne irritants are removed, allergy and asthma sufferers often find relief from their symptoms. Even healthy people who have never suffered from allergies can benefit from clean air. Dust, smoke and other particles float around in the air, causing your drapes and furniture to gather dust. By removing airborne dust particles, you reduce the amount of exposure your respiratory system has to them.

What is an AHRI-matched system?

What if my HVAC system uses R-22?

R-22 is in the final phase of completely being phased out. The prices of R-22 have been on the rise by 50% to 100% all the way to 350%.
